This body of work contains retro-inspired imagery that was painted out of a fascination with an era that was ripe with celebration and sensual pleasure. Common themes and images appear in this series. Warm days spent at the beach, classic cars, fashionable shoes, and luscious cakes & candy are teamed with the glamorous women of the 1940's and 50's. There is a feeling of light-heartedness to the work, as I remain devoted to a vivid palette of lively colors.
This continuing series began with an image of my mother standing in front of an old Roaster convertible, on a hot summer day, in her bathing suit. Painting it was such a joyful experience that I combed through the old family albums looking for further inspiration. If you are familiar with pop art, you will surely feel the influence of William Thiebaud and Andy Warhol in this work.
